IPO, GMP & Listing Basics
What is an IPO?
An Initial Public Offering is the process through which a company offers shares to public investors for the first time. Investors apply during the issue period, and successful applicants receive shares before listing on the stock exchange.
What is GMP?
Grey Market Premium is an unofficial indication of the premium or discount at which an IPO is perceived to trade before listing. For example, an issue price of ₹100 with a GMP of ₹25 gives an indicative listing expectation of ₹125.
GMP is not a guarantee
GMP can move sharply as market sentiment changes. The actual listing price may differ from the grey market indication, so GMP should be considered alongside the company's fundamentals, valuation, risks and issue documents.
Mainboard vs SME
Mainboard and SME IPOs have different issue structures, application sizes, liquidity characteristics and risk profiles. SME issues can have higher minimum application amounts and may experience lower post-listing liquidity.
