Sensex Tumbles 813 Pts, Nifty Drops Below 23,450 Amid Broad-Based Selling and Global Headwinds

Indian equity benchmarks witnessed sharp selling pressure on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, tracking subdued global sentiment and sustained institutional outflows. The BSE Sensex plunged 813.35 points or 1.08% to end at 74,764.23, while the NSE Nifty 50 declined 203.60 points or 0.86% to settle at 23,431.50.

Sectorally, the sell-off was widespread, with heavyweights in Banking, Financial Services, and IT bearing the brunt of the downturn. High-beta auto and metal stocks also traded under severe pressure throughout the session. On the flip side, select defensive pockets in FMCG and Pharmaceuticals managed modest resilience against the broader market slump.

Macroeconomic headwinds added to the cautious stance, with elevated crude oil prices and a weaker Indian Rupee against the US Dollar dampening risk appetite. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the cash segment, offsetting selective buying support from Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs). Technicians note that holding above the crucial support zone around 23,300 will be vital for the Nifty to avert deeper consolidation in the upcoming sessions.
