Sensex Sheds 243 Points, Nifty Settles at 22,716 Amid Profit Booking in Heavyweights

Indian equity benchmark indices witnessed mild profit booking on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, tracking mixed global cues. The BSE Sensex dropped 242.65 points or 0.33% to settle at 72,529.07, while the NSE Nifty 50 ended lower by 64.05 points or 0.28% at 22,716.20.

Sectoral trends remained mixed during the session. Banking, Financial Services, and IT heavyweight stocks led the draggers, curbing intraday recovery attempts. On the flip side, defensive counters in Pharma and FMCG, alongside select Auto names, showed resilience and capped deeper losses.

On the macroeconomic front, elevated crude oil prices and a steady US dollar index weighed on investor sentiment, keeping the Indian Rupee in a tight range. Institutional activity showed modest net selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) offered cushion through selective dip-buying across large-cap counters.
