Sensex Tumbles 876 Points, Nifty Slips Below 22,900 Amid Broad-Based Selloff

Indian equity benchmarks witnessed sharp across-the-board selling on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The BSE Sensex slid 876.38 points or 1.17% to settle at 73,852.90, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 257.20 points or 1.11% to close at 22,888.95, breaching key psychological support levels.

Market breadth remained heavily skewed toward the bears. High-beta sectors bore the brunt of the downturn, with Nifty Bank, Financial Services, Metal, and IT slipping over 1.2% each. Heavyweights such as HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and ICICI Bank emerged as the top drags. Conversely, defensive pockets like FMCG and select Pharma names showed resilience, limiting further downside.

Macroeconomic headwinds triggered the risk-off sentiment. Sustained Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) outflows, coupled with hardening US Treasury yields and elevated Brent crude prices hovering near multi-week highs, weighed on investor sentiment. Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee depreciated marginally against the US Dollar, tracking mixed global cues and persistent geopolitical uncertainties.
