Indian equity benchmarks snapped their upward momentum on Wednesday to close marginally lower amid cautious global cues and profit booking in key cyclical sectors. The BSE Sensex settled lower by 143.21 points (-0.19%) at 73,709.69, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 shed 77.60 points (-0.34%) to finish at 22,811.35.
Sectoral trends remained mixed across the board. Nifty Auto, Metal, and Realty witnessed intense selling pressure, dragging the headline indices lower. High-beta names such as Tata Motors, Hindalco, and JSW Steel emerged as top laggards. Conversely, defensive buying cushioned sharper losses, with Nifty FMCG and IT holding firm, led by modest gains in heavyweights like TCS, Infosys, and ITC.
On the macroeconomic front, elevated crude oil prices—with Brent hovering near $86 per barrel—and sticky US bond yields weighed on domestic market sentiment. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued their net selling trend in the secondary market, though steady absorption by Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) prevented deeper downside. Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee consolidated within a narrow band against the US Dollar as participants awaited fresh directional triggers.
