Indian equity benchmarks closed Wednesday's session on a subdued note following persistent volatility and broad-based profit-taking across key sectors. The BSE Sensex declined by 183.16 points or 0.24% to settle at 77,472.94, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 dropped 126.80 points or 0.52% to finish at 24,207.75.
Sectoral performance remained predominantly weak, with Nifty Metal, Auto, and Media bearing the brunt of the downturn. In contrast, selective buying in private banking and FMCG majors helped cap deeper losses for the frontline gauges. Top index laggards included prominent metal and technology counters, while select defensive names in consumer goods provided minor support.
On the macroeconomic front, sentiment was dampened by elevated crude oil prices and continued Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) net selling in the cash segment, which largely countered domestic institutional (DII) inflows. The Indian Rupee traded in a tight band against the US Dollar amid cautiousness across global markets ahead of key economic data releases.
